VIEWPOINT OF THE GARDEN OF CALIXTO AND MELIBEA

30 minutes
Located right in the heart of Salamanca's old town, behind the cathedrals and just a few steps from Patio Chico, the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea is a municipal garden of approximately 2,500 square meters. Its name commemorates the protagonists of La Celestina, the immortal work by Fernando de Rojas, as local tradition places the setting for the romantic encounter between Calixto and Melibea in this very spot. The Garden offers breathtaking views of Salamanca's cathedrals, which has earned it a prominent place on the city's Viewpoint Route. The lush vegetation that envelops it makes it an ideal place for a stroll, reading, or simply letting yourself be captivated by the magical atmosphere that the literary work evokes.
Right in Salamanca's historic quarter, behind the cathedrals and along the route of the ancient medieval wall, lies the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea, a garden spot steeped in symbolism. Its name pays homage to the protagonists of La Celestina, Fernando de Rojas' celebrated work, as tradition places the scene of Calixto and Melibea's romantic encounter here.

Access is located at the end of Calle del Arcediano. Before crossing the gate, to the left, a sculpture dedicated to Celestina welcomes us. This work by the Salamanca-born sculptor Agustín Casillas masterfully captured on the old woman's face, tired and deeply furrowed with wrinkles, the ravages of her difficult life. The stone pedestal displays a relief of Calixto and Melibea, accompanied by a quote extracted from the work: "I am an old woman as God made me, no worse than any other. Whether I live well or badly, God is the witness of my heart." To the right is the Casa de la Calera, converted into a Hostel for pilgrims walking the Vía de la Plata towards Santiago de Compostela.

The Huerto was acquired by the Salamanca City Council in 1981, with the aim of transforming it into a public garden. The restoration sought to recreate a medieval ambiance, with a certain romantic air, evoking the imaginary garden where the lovers' story unfolds. In 1992, the so-called Jardín del Visir (Vizier's Garden) was added, named after its previous owner's nickname. It covers an area of 2300 m2, featuring varied and abundant vegetation, as well as distinct architectural elements harmoniously distributed throughout the surroundings, making the garden one of the city's most charming places, ideal for relaxation, reading, or simply enjoying the rustling of leaves and the singing of birds.

Situated atop the wall, its elevated position offers magnificent views of the city. When night falls and the city lights up, the spectacle becomes simply unforgettable.
