Model of the Monument to the Businessman. Year 1986

Piece made by Gabriel Sánchez Calzada and donated by his son Julio Sánchez Holgado. Materials: Plaster and wood. Dimensions: 120cm high by 50cm wide.

With this model, the sculptor Gabriel Sánchez Calzada won the competition in 1986 to create the Monument to the Entrepreneur that we can see today in Salamanca's Gran Vía. The commission was made by the Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the institution's centenary. On the pedestal appear reliefs of various business activities such as bills of exchange, coins, acronyms of commercial companies, a compass rose, etc. All this under the representation of the Roman god Mercury, the protector of merchants and travelers, among other attributes. The cleaning, consolidation, volumetric reintegration, and final surface protection were carried out by the restorer Isabel Pantaleón Rodríguez.
